The German Climate Center GmbH (hereinafter referred to as DKRZ) operates a data center for the implementation of climate simulations as a supraregional service facility. In addition, the DKRZ maintains all the technical facilities necessary for the processing and evaluation of relevant data, maintains and develops general user software relevant for climate research, advises and supports its users in IT issues and participates in national and international projects and cooperations with the Aim of improving the climate modeling infrastructure.

The client plans to procure an energy-efficient high-performance computer including file system including maintenance and support for a term of 5 years, with optional extension for another 2 years.

The high-performance computer is to replace the bullet cluster currently operated at the customer's headquarters as part of the HLRE 3 (high-speed computer system for Earth system research). The current system has:

- 100,000 cores,

- a high-performance Infiniband network with a peak performance of around 3.60 PFlops / s,

- a main memory of 270 terabytes,

- a broadband direct connection to a storage system of 55 petabytes of usable capacity.

The computer system to be procured consists of two temporally successive expansion stages.

In the first expansion stage (S1), the high-performance computer must provide at least the computing power of the existing high-performance computer in relation to typical climate modeling applications. In the second expansion stage (S2), another high-performance computer with at least the same performance as the high-performance computer of stage 1 is to be supplied. The service to be provided is defined by the DKRZ benchmark suite 2019.

The entire system is to be installed in the stages just described in the computing areas of the DKRZ on Bundesstraße 45a in Hamburg and operated by the DKRZ.

The new high-performance computer will be delivered and installed in two phases. The first phase should be available to users at the latest by mid-2020, the second phase approx. One year later.

The support contract also includes on-site system and application support by specialized personnel.
