Description:
Pilot Project: Making the Iron Gates Dams Passable for Danube Sturgeon

The objectives of this pilot project is to assess technical solutions for opening a migration route for sturgeon at the Iron Gate hydropower dams on the Danube river on the border between Romania and Serbia. There is no ready-to-use design/solution and considering the size of the dams (among the largest in Europe), the size of the fish (up to 7 meters) and also the local terrain surrounding the Iron Gates, the project necessitates innovative approaches. The project will have clear EU added value as it will contribute to achieving the environmental objectives of the water framework directive, the habitats directive as well as the Bern Convention. It will also promote cross-border co-operation between the EU and its neighbours.
