The Saarbrücken Regional Association (client) intends to award construction and planning services to a general contractor for the construction project: Expansion of the Mügelsberg campus with a new extension/extension in modular construction and the conversion of the existing building (component III A).

The present case concerns the expansion of the Mügelsberg campus with a new extension/extension in modular construction and the conversion of the existing building (component III A). The construction project is planned on the site of the technical-industrial vocational training centres Mügelsberg 1 and 2 in Saarbrücken. There are two school sites on the property: TGBBZ 1 and TGBBZ 2 (see map). The existing buildings of both schools form a joint ensemble, which is a listed building.

Due to the long period of use without major renovation or conversion measures, the building is in a condition that makes a general renovation necessary.

Today's current regulations require urgent improvements, especially in fire protection, but also in heat and sound insulation as well as in the usability of buildings for people with limited mobility. In addition, the technical service life of the entire building services system has been far exceeded. Due to the age of the building, these can no longer be replaced and are therefore in need of complete renewal.

The need for an expansion on the Mügelsberg arises from the relocation of the branch office of the TGBBZ 2 (School 2) in Malstatt, to the Mügelsberg campus. The vacant buildings of the Paul Schmook School in Malstatt will be used by the European School Saarland, which has been in the old building since 2021.

On the site of the two TGBBZ's, an extension will be built by an extension to the existing building IIIA. This extension will be realized in modular timber construction. The modular building will be equipped barrier-free from the ground floor over 3 floors with an elevator (ground floor - 2nd floor) as well as with further open teaching and learning levels and additional toilet facilities (ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor).

The Mügelsberg site with the two schools: TGBBZ 1 and TGBBZ 2 will be renamed "Campus Mügelsberg". The two schools went through "planning phase zero" independently of each other, with a school construction consultant as an educator and an architect from the building authority/planning. From an architectural and pedagogical point of view, the designs of the individual floor plans with a wide variety of uses, due to the large number of professions, are the basis for the design of the levels. Phase zero and the feedback rounds are the basis for further planning, there will be no classrooms in a conservative form (frontal teaching). All required functions can be found on open and transparent levels.

The resulting increased demands on acoustic and structural measures, in the area of the ceilings and perhaps also the walls, must be taken into account.
