The European Social Survey, European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ESS ERIC) Director seeks to appoint an institution to provide a Chair of the European Social Survey Sampling and Weighting Expert Panel. The Chair will have responsibility for the sampling and weighting tasks for ESS Round 8 and prepare those activities for ESS Round 9, relating to the Work Programme 2017-2019 (1.6.2017 to 31.5.2019). The overall aims for the Chair will be to:
(a) Ensure, in consultation with ESS National Coordinators, that the most effective sampling designs possible according to ESS standards are designed, drawn and documented;
(b) Produce the different weights that ESS disseminates to its users;
(c) Ensure that ESS procedures and standards regarding sampling reflect the state of the art;
(d) Advise the CST on best practices in the area of sampling.
The Chair of the Sampling and Weighting Expert Panel will lead a work package on sampling and weighting in the next ESS ERIC work programme (June 2017 to May 2019). The Chair will be a member of the ESS Core Scientific Team (CST).
The overall aims for the Chair will be to:
(a) Ensure, in consultation with ESS National Coordinators, that the most effective sampling designs possible according to ESS standards are designed, drawn and documented;
(b) Produce the different weights that ESS disseminates to its users;
(c) Ensure that ESS procedures and standards regarding sampling reflect the state of the art;
(d) Advise the CST on best practices in the area of sampling.
Specific tasks with associated deliverables will be undertaken by the Chair
(1) Establish the ESS Sampling and Weighting Expert Panel;
(2) Assess and approve sampling designs for each participating country;
(3) Produce design and post-stratification weights for ESS Round 8;
4) Assess the socio-demographic sample composition in ESS Round 7.
The Chair will ensure effective communication between the ESS fieldwork team and the Sampling and Weighting Expert Panel, as well as with the ESS Data Archive. The Chair will be required to lead discussions about sampling issues and contribute to overall discussions about the ESS survey life-cycle.
