Welsh Government (WG) on behalf of the Welsh Ministers is seeking bidders of services for the slaughter on farm of animals affected by bovine tuberculosis (TB), removal and disposal of carcass, and provision of post mortem (PM) facilities.
TB is one of the most complex animal health problems currently facing the farming industry in Wales. As part of the TB Eradication Programme, cattle are subject to regular surveillance testing for this disease. In the event of a positive reaction to testing or where there is a likelihood of infection with TB, cattle are compulsory removed from farms and slaughtered.
WG requires animals to be removed from farms within 10 Working Days of reactor confirmation. If Cattle are fit to travel, slaughter takes place in a red meat slaughterhouse approved by the Food Standards Agency. However in certain circumstances there is a need to slaughter animals on farm e.g. when the animal is not fit to travel due to welfare considerations or where the animal is still subject to medicine withdrawal periods and cannot be slaughtered for human consumption.
Bidders are required to provide the slaughter of animals on farm, removal and transport of carcasses, presentation of carcass for post mortem (PM) and provision of accommodation and PM facilities, and disposal of carcass and all other waste arising.
