More insight into the current situation of the base-acid state and quality of habitats is needed to obtain a broad view of:
(a) the current situation of base-rich barren lands;
(b) determine whether or not remedial measures implemented are effective; and
(c) adjust existing and future recovery plans as necessary.
This research proposal covers parts a and b. Part c may consist of a follow-up project for the 2nd phase of the UPN in the form of a restoration programme for groundwater-dependent base-loving habitats in which researchers, managers and policy makers work together. This may include monitoring in areas where recovery has been carried out or is about to be carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of measures. This could also be accompanied by review and adjustment of new recovery plans. This then contributes to the successful application of the complex knowledge in recovery and management practice and offers the opportunity to learn from each other.
