Description:
Procurement of CISCO network components

The object of the contract is the procurement (delivery) of IT hardware of different sizes and performance, associated software and licenses of the manufacturer Cisco Systems as well as related maintenance services. In addition to the hardware, the customer shall also supply software that is necessary for the normal use and proper functioning of the hardware (system-level software). In addition, specific management applications are required for some systems, which are also part of the contract. Likewise, the optional commissioning of support services by the client is part of the contract.

The SME operates an extensive and complex information technology (IT) infrastructure for the provision of digital services for the medical care of patients as well as for training, teaching and research. The IT department of KMB is responsible for all areas relating to information technology and telecommunications at the hospital. This includes network and data center infrastructure with servers and storage systems, as well as centralized and medical IT services and applications. Furthermore, the IT department provides the individual organizations of the hospital with subject-specific application software for clinical and training-related activities.

The LAN and WLAN infrastructure is homogeneous and is based exclusively on components from the manufacturer Cisco Systems. Currently, more than 220 LAN switches and about 300 wireless LAN (WLAN) access points (AP)s are active in the SME network. An overview of the currently operated network components of the manufacturer Cisco Systems is provided in the documents.

As a maximum care hospital, the KMB is subject to the Ordinance on the Determination of Critical Infrastructures according to the BSI-Kritisverordnung (BSI-KritisV) and must therefore make the IT infrastructure consistently available. Continuous modernization and needs-based expansion of the IT infrastructure is indispensable.

Due to the sometimes old age and resulting lack of manufacturer support, the modernization of the network infrastructure is necessary. This is to be done by using the latest generation of network components from the manufacturer Cisco Systems.

The further development of the system components based on Cisco Systems is carried out in the interest of ensuring system security and ensuring security functions, thus excluding any risk potential of impairment of system operation (risk of malfunctions, compatibility problems). By pursuing the previous solution approach, additional costs due to a necessary conversion effort and adaptations to existing software or the implementation of interfaces for connecting other manufacturer products can be avoided. In addition, parallel operation during the system changeover, which endangers daily system operation, is avoided. With the further expansion of the Cisco architecture, acquired knowledge of the operating personnel can continue to be used and the support of the IT infrastructure can be continued in a targeted and efficient manner. There is no need for additional training and further education costs for the SME employees. Therefore, the adopted single-vendor strategy with Cisco products is to be pursued.

The SME plans to renew the existing network components over the next few years. In order to procure the necessary equipment, KMB conducts an award procedure for the conclusion of a framework contract for the supply and transfer of Cisco components as well as associated maintenance and support services.
