As part of the post-flood reconstruction/renovation of the city centre and in particular the projects included in the portfolio submitted to ERDF calls 21-27, a project to supply buildings with cold and hot water supply by open geothermal energy has been proposed. The Verviers subsoil, although little mapped, most likely contains areas suitable for shallow geothermal energy, especially in the alluvial plain of the Vesdre on which the city center was built. At the center of this project is the energy renovation of the former Grand Bazaar located rue Crapaurue and its transformation into an Administrative City, as well as the renovation of the C&A into a Creative Hub. The installation of an open geothermal system in the hyper center (high density of applicants) to supply energy to the renovated buildings is an example of innovation and adaptation by the City of Verviers.

This contract is the first step of the project, namely the exploration, by drilling in the various aquifers, of the geothermal potential in the city center and the feasibility study of an open geothermal project allowing the supply of renovated buildings and a potential temperate water loop – thermal energy community.
