The Contracting Authority has one main library and 21 local libraries/combination libraries. Deichman bibliotek [Deichmann Library] is Oslo's public library and is the city's most visited cultural institution with around 2 500 000 visitors annually. The Public Library is a statutory service that lies in the junction between culture and education, and is anchored in the democratic principle of equal and free access to information and knowledge. The Public Library Act states that the public library's task is to promote information, education and other cultural activities through active communication. The library is therefore both an arena for knowledge and for inspiration.
In 2020, Oslo's population will get a new main library in Bjørvika (Deichman Bjørvika).
