Description:

The objective of the procurement is to ensure Norwegian Meteorological Institute's (the Awarding Authority), henceforth referred to as MET Norway, requirement for obtaining the best possible observations of the atmosphere.

MET Norway has a well developed network of C-band radar systems, but understands that this network does not fill all needs. At the edge of a coverage area for a C-band radar or in areas where the radar is blocked, unambiguous results of the precipitation in the atmosphere are not feasible. These problems are well known and several countries in Europe have initiated the use of X-band radar systems in order to supplement the national C- and S-band networks.

It is a requirement to reveal the effect of implementing supplementary radar systems to get a better description of the precipitation in Norway. The last years the importance of remote sencing data has increased in relation to weather forecasting. X-band radar system is the next step towards an even better coverage of the observation of the atmosphere. How X-band radar systems function in connection with short term precipitation, extreme shower incidents and precipitation distribution in cities is of great interest. Radar reflectivity and Doppler Wind is now in progress of being used in the weather forecast models. The equipment included in this contract shall be mobile.
