The aim is to determine the total CO2 footprint of the individual AOKs. This is the basis for any strategic action with regard to climate neutrality, which the Federal Government wants to achieve for Germany by 2045. The basis for the climate balance is a comprehensive data analysis in the areas of real estate, events, transport, IT, logistics and mobility as well as other.

In the distribution, this is divided into three scopes:

- Direct emissions (Scope 1)

- Indirect emissions (Scope 2)

- Other indirect emissions (Scope 3)

The climate balance is to be carried out and implemented according to recognized standards (Greenhouse Gas Protocol). This requires far-reaching competencies in the AOK system, which are ensured by external service providers. In addition, a suitable IT tool is required for balancing in order to be able to record and calculate CO2 emissions. Based on the determined result, goals for the future must be developed and strategies derived. It is of great importance to take up the political orientations and legal requirements and to make a positive contribution to the Paris Agreement. With the collection of data, processes must be optimized or newly developed in order to ensure sustainable management in the future.
