Tier 3 Weight Management Services for West Essex

West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group wishes to establish a single provider contract for the provisions of Tier 3 Weight Management Services.

Tier 3 weight management services provides the link between Tier 1 and 2 environmental and population-wide services and lifestyle interventions and Tier 4 Specialist Bariatric Surgical Services. Access to Tier 4 is dependent on completion of the Tier 3 service programme.

This service seeks to provide a safe and effective high-quality weight management service which supports patients to achieve clinically significant weight loss through safe and sustainable means. The service will be delivered in a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing behavioural, psychological and clinical challenges faced by obese individuals.

West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group wishes to establish a single provider contract for the provisions of Tier 3 Weight Management Services.

Approximately 2 thirds of adults in the UK are overweight, 1 in 4 are obese and 1 in 3 children aged 10-11 are overweight or obese. Both conditions predispose to diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, cancer and general ill health.

West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group has a population of approximately 315 000. It consists of 32 GP member practices that are working together to ensure the local population has high-quality healthcare services which are sustainable.

Tier 3 weight management services provides the link between Tier 1 and 2 environmental and population-wide services and lifestyle interventions and Tier 4 Specialist Bariatric Surgical Services. Access to Tier 4 is dependent on completion of the Tier 3 service programme.

Increased weight and obesity present a major challenge to the current and future health of the local population. Higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from a range of conditions including hypertension, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several cancers. It also contributes to increased social care costs.

This service seeks to provide a safe and effective high-quality weight management service which supports patients to achieve clinically significant weight loss through safe and sustainable means. The service will be delivered in a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing behavioural, psychological and clinical challenges faced by obese individuals.
