The AMRC has a requirement for equipment to manufacture precision preformed coils for high-performance electrical machines for use in prototyping and development work. By way of indication, the suite of equipment might include a linear winding machine, coil stretching/shaping machine, and presses for shaping and consolidating resin-rich taped coils.
Whilst capability exists in industry to produce such pre-formed coils upwards of around 0.5 m to several metres long, the current requirements demand the same control over geometry on coils from tens to several hundred millimetres in length. This scaling down of the coil sizes could be achieved through appropriate scaling of existing pre-formed coil equipment designs and/or from the adoption of alternative techniques such as direct winding to shape.
