The city council of Pekela decided in December 2021 to keep the Pekelerhoofddiep navigable and established the frameworks for this. The total number of bridges in the Pekelerhoofddiep will eventually be reduced to approximately 13 bridges and approximately 16 km of fencing will be replaced.

In order to accompany this programme in the technical field, the municipality of Pekela intends to conclude a Framework Agreement with an engineering firm for the provision of services and products for the preparation and implementation of the Pekelerhoofddiep Bridges Programme.
