Sykehuspartner is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a large number of databases for the health companies in Helse Sør-Øst RHF.
The large number of databases are small databases, with a limited number of users, but some of the databases are partly very large with a large number of simultaneous users. Very many of the databases are currently run as independent installations for each individual health company, even if they are identical applications and have relatively identical configuration.
The largest and most important databases are from the supplier Dips, with the database for OUSHF as the largest, which is approx. 42TB with approx. 5 000 simultaneous users. The other health companies's databases are from 20TB and approx. 3 000 simultaneous users, down to 1TB and 300 simultaneous users.
In total the Dips databases are 110TB and have approx. 20 000 simultaneous users. The databases are growing by approx. 10TB per quarter.
All of the current Dips installations are on ‘traditional’ infrastructure, with from 2 to 6 Dell servers with Hitachi-SAN and Oracle 11g on RHEL6.
Backup is done with ‘traditional’ backup with Rman and NetBackup, but 24 hours is not long enough to take a backup of the largest databases. A decision has therefore been made and a process has been started to procure Oracle ZDLRA in order to deal with this.
The use of Dips with several hundred integrations with other systems (such as Lab and X-ray systems) means so much reading and writing to and from the SAN systems, that these systems are close to maximum capacity for large parts of the day. This is particularly because Hitachi SAN is also shared with a number of other servers and applications.
A decision has now been made that all the Dips databases shall be merged to 1 database. This will mean 1 database with approx. 160TB at the merger date and over 20 000 simultaneous users. There is, due to the challenges we have with the capacity and performance of the current SAN system, some uncertainty as to whether the current system will manage this load.
Tests have therefore been carried out in order to clarify whether Deps can achieve improved performance on a converged infrastructure, with very good results. Therefore a decision has been made that further tests shall be carried out on such a platform, 1
