The city of Lingen (Ems) is planning the development of residential areas in the district of Baccum - on the street Zum Hagen, as well as in the district of Holthausen - on the street Processionweg.
In November 2021, a total of 33 archaeologically relevant findings were found in the district of Baccum during prospecting, but only in the south of the elongated plot. These are mainly post pits, in addition there are some pits as well as a trench and a presumed stove or stove. This indicates a prehistoric boiling. The twelve recovered vessel fragments only allow a generally pre-historical dating. In view of the number and distribution of the findings, a small-scale partial excavation of at least 3,000 m2 in the south of the planning area is required.
In the district of Holthausen south of the procession path, a prospection was carried out at the end of 2021 on a total of 3,974 m2. In March 2022, the area north of the procession path with a total of 1,271 m2 was explored. The whole area could already be addressed in advance as ar-cheologically relevant.
In the southern area of the processional route, a total of 203 archaeologically relevant structures were documented.
On the northern area, a total of 135 archaeologically relevant findings were documented. The total of 338 findings are primarily post pits, which (so far) can not be recognized for any building structures. In several search ditches, however, the dense concentration speaks for cut house floor plans. Various larger findings, which can generally be addressed as pits, as well as trench-like structures appear. The 24 recovered ceramic finds in the area north of the procession path mainly indicate settlement activity in the Middle Ages and Neolithic, while in the southern area a time position of the pre-Roman Iron Age/Imperial Age can initially be assumed.
In view of the distribution of the findings of the prospection excavation, three sub-areas of around 17,690 m2 have been defined that must be excavated.
