The idea of a small-town academy was developed as part of the research field "Potentials of Small Towns in Peripheral Locations" in Experimental Housing and Urban Development and developed together with the mayors of the municipalities, the advisory board and other experts from science, politics and practice.

The pilot phase is intended to strengthen the definition of goals, structure, model testing of tailor-made offers and to clarify the question of whether a small-town academy should be consolidated. This should be done with participants from the communities, science, practice and politics in various formats.
