Wernigerode Castle is one of the most important cultural monuments in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In its early medieval core, the castle was expanded into a ring-shaped complex in the course of modern times. In the middle/end of the 19th century, a comprehensive reconstruction took place in the historicist style typical of the time, which today characterizes the formative shape of the monument. Wernigerode Castle is located in the immediate vicinity of the village of Wernigerode on the Schlossberg. It is visible from afar in the landscape. The entire complex was laid out on sight. Due to the elevated position and the fortified character of the entire complex, the castle can only be reached to a limited extent via only two paths. As part of the urgently needed renovation of the retaining walls but also of individual parts of the palace complex, it is intended to expand the development of the listed castle complex in a more generation-friendly way. This includes the installation of elevators, the structural addition of ramps, railings and a lift, as well as the renovation of entire parts of the building.
