Description:
Tender for the rehabilitation project of the "No. 5 Elbe"

"Restoration of the listed pilot schooner No.5 ELBE"

The wooden pilot schooner No.5 ELBE was commissioned in 1882 by the Deputation for Trade and Shipping from the H.C.Stülcken shipyard, which was then based in Hamburg, for construction and delivered a year later. The purpose of the ship was, as an above-average seaworthy, easily manoeuvrable and fast two-masted schooner, to transfer pilots in the North Sea in all weather conditions to seagoing vessels entering the Elbe River. It was also used permanently as a stationary pilot station in the most nautically demanding and harsh sea area in the world, the German Bight. Since 2002, the ship has been owned by the Hamburg Maritim Foundation, which preserves the maritime heritage of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Since 2016, the ship has been registered in the Hamburg List of Movable Cultural Monuments as the last representative of an important era of sea pilotage, largely preserved in its original substance. It is an approved traditional ship and is used for guest trips as well as for cultural events on the moored ship.

Consequently, the ship's accident on 08.06.2019 in the Elbe fairway off Stadersand with the subsequent sinking of the object, a comprehensive reconstruction of the historic two-masted schooner must take place.

After salvage, the ship has already been gutted, extensively cleaned and the hull has then been structurally strengthened. For the reconstruction of the monument, funding was obtained from the special monument protection program of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, as well as the Hamburg Monument Protection Program.

Since the completion of the previous structural upgrade, the hull has been floating at the Bremer Kai jetty in Hamburg's Hansahafen. Essential and absolutely necessary partial work for ship safety and grandfathering, such as the procurement and installation of bilge and fire pumps, the creation of an electrical infrastructure and protective measures for the historic interior fittings, have already been carried out by the operating association itself. The remaining work necessary for the complete restoration began in early summer 2023 and will be successively tendered, commissioned and executed.

The overarching goal is for the floating monument to be able to carry out guest cruises on the Elbe and in coastal waters again as an approved traditional ship from summer 2025 onwards to illustrate nautical traditions and maritime practices.
