Research project - DZSF - Feasibility study of a dust extraction system for ballast grading machines

Ballast grading machines are used to restore or restore the ballast cross-section in the track. Their use is an essential part of maintenance measures for the superstructure. The dust swirling up during transport, levelling and sweeping of the gravel is considerable. The permissible limit values for the maximum workplace concentration of mineral and quartz-containing dusts in the area of ballast grading machines are far exceeded. In Annex I No. 2.3 (3), the GefStoffV requires that dust-emitting systems, machines and devices must be equipped with an effective extraction system, insofar as this is possible according to the state of the art. So far, ballast leveling machines have been used without dust reduction or vacuuming. Since extraction is usually the most effective method for minimizing dust in machines, the project aims to develop a technical solution for dust extraction for ballast grading machines that can be implemented while meeting all operational requirements. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of retrofitting existing machines.
