The Bürgerspitalstiftung Straubing is a public, non-profit and charitable foundation that is mainly active in the field of care for the elderly. It is administered by the organs of the city of Straubing. Currently, the Bürgerspitalstiftung operates two retirement homes, the St. Nikola retirement home in Pfauenstraße and the Bürgerheim, located at the Spitaltor.

To the south of the existing buildings of the St. Nikola retirement home, a building complex is planned as a replacement for two now obsolete existing buildings with a total of 160 beds. On the ground floor of the planned new building, a three-group children's facility with corresponding outdoor facilities is to be created. Also on the ground floor, an area for a café is planned. The measure is part of an overall strategy for the further development of retirement homes. In total, the open spaces of the partly tree-lined property of the Bürgerspitalstiftung St. Nikola extend to approx. 15,600 square meters.
