The Helsinki Region Travel Card System is an electronic ticketing/fare collection system introduced in 2002. The travel card is valid on all modes of public transport in the HSL area. As a ticket media HSL is using cards based on ISO 14443 A compliant Mifare DESFire (plastic cards) and ultralight chips (paper cards/tickets). Cards with ultralight chips are for short period tickets, their validity time being from 2 hours to 14 days.

Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (HSL) is responsible for the planning and organization of public transport services in its member municipalities, as well as for the preparation of the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan. The member municipalities of the joint local authority are Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Sipoo, Tuusula and Siuntio. These municipalities form the HSL area. Later on, the rest of the municipalities in the Helsinki region may join in. These municipalities include Järvenpää, Nurmijärvi, Mäntsälä, Pornainen, Hyvinkää and Vihti. The tasks of HSL comprise planning and organization of public transport in the region, improving operating conditions for public transport, procurement of bus, tram, metro, ferry and commuter train services and preparation of the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan.
