Södermalm is one of Stockholm's 14 suburban areas and belongs to the inner city. The district area consists of Södermalm, Långholmen, Reimersholme, Hammarby Sjöstad and Gamla Stan. The nature reserves Årsta Holmar and Sickla Ekpark are also included in Södermalm. The area includes buildings, streets, parks, nature areas, as well as quays and beaches. Södermalm consists largely of dense neighborhoods and the district has a vibrant city life with a great element of service. In the evening, Södermalm is well-visited because of its range of restaurants and nightlife.
In the district area, in 2017, there were 129 738 persons and 95 894 persons employed in the area. About 21,000 of these come to Södermalm to work. These figures increase annually and are not expected to stagnate.
For the procurement of park management, the district area has been divided into two parts, east and west.
For the entire district of Södermalm, the total park area is approximately 1,287 ha, of which approximately 65 ha constitute natural land.

The green structure at Södermalm includes various large parks and nature areas. Neighborhood parks such as Björns Trädgård, Vitabergsparken and Drakenbergsparken; Nature parks such as Tantolunden and Fåfängan; Neighborhood parks such as Anders Franzén's park and the Berg mine; as well as pocket parks such as Junotäppan, Bryggartäppan and Lindvallsplan.
Many parks have cultural-historical and aesthetic values and at the same time are important everyday environments for children and adults. The attractiveness of the parks, various events and the density of the city means high visitor pressure and great wear and tear, which requires extensive maintenance, cleaning, gentle renovation and renewal.
