New Data Center Max Planck Campus Martinsried; Structural design with shoring

The subject of the contract to be awarded is the structural design for the building, as well as the object planning including structural design for the excavation pit enclosure of a data center on the Martinsried campus. The contract to be awarded includes services of the service phases 2-6 according to §§ 49 ff. HOAI 2021 as well as for the installation additionally the work phases 2, 3 and 6-8 according to §§ 41 ff. HOAI 2021 and the work phases 2-6 according to §§ 49 ff. HOAI 2021, each with special services.

The upper cost limit for the construction costs of new construction according to KGR 200 to 700 is approx. EUR 47 million (net). Of this amount to KGR 300 and KGR 400 to approximately EUR 30 million (net).

The remuneration for the building is based on the HOAI (fee zone III, minimum rate) on the basis of predefined parameters that are the same for all applicants. The details of the services to be awarded as well as for the remuneration can be found in the draft contract provided.

More detailed and important information on the planning services to be awarded (object of the contract) is described under point II.2.4) of this announcement.

The Max Planck Society plans to build a superordinate central data center for all Max Planck Institutes at the site of the future 'Life Science Campus Martinsried'.

The Martinsried research campus, located on the southern edge of Munich, was built between 1968 and 1986. It has biological-medical laboratories, offices and common areas. The entire building fabric is technically and energetically in great need of renovation. On the basis of a new urban structure that has yet to be developed, the existing research buildings will be replaced by future-proof and sustainable buildings in several construction phases in the 'Life Science Campus Martinsried' project.

The aim of the new DATA Center is to develop a future-proof, efficient data center concept. In addition, the customer's claim is to ensure that operation is as energy-efficient as possible with the most favorable CO2 balance possible, also in order to keep operating costs as low as possible. In connection with the 'Life Science Campus', synergies with regard to sustainability are to be exploited (u.. A. Use of waste heat for campus etc.).

The data center is operated by the Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF, formerly RZG). The MPCDF is a cross-institutional competence center of the Max Planck Society for the support of computer and data sciences. The MPCDF operates a state-of-the-art supercomputer, several midrange computing systems and data repositories for various Max Planck Institutes and provides a modern infrastructure for data management including long-term archiving. MpCDF currently operates a data center in Garching with a capacity of approx. 5 MW.

The Max Planck Society is a pioneer and preparer for new technologies. This obliges to ensure that even when building a new data center, it is necessary to use the resources that must be spent on the construction and operation of a data center as efficiently as possible. The data center is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2026 with a connected load of approximately 7 MW. When planning, it must be taken into account that the data center is to be further expanded after 2026 in several expansion stages up to a possible connected load of 20 MW in the final expansion in 2035. All structural requirements are to be provided for the final expansion in terms of area, the technical expansion is planned in 3-4 stages.

The location for the DATA Center of the MPCDF of the MPG is located in the northeastern part of the campus site at the site of a former greenhouse facility, which will soon be demolished. The construction site is located on an old refilled gravel pit.

The campus site is designated in the land use plan as a special area (SO) for science. In the valid development plan (B.-Nr 54), a usable area of 1,750 m² with a maximum wall height of 8 m (WH 8.0) is specified at the intended location. In the further course of planning, it must be clarified whether deviations from the requirements of the B plan will be necessary (the municipality of Planegg is positive about the project in principle).

Currently, there are still divisions and technical systems of various media on the construction site to a small extent, which must be secured in the course of the construction project and, if necessary, relocated or removed.

The room program includes approx. 1,550 m² server space (white space), approx. 100 m² for offices as well as approx. 30 m² for a workshop and approx. 50 m² for lounges and meeting rooms. In total, the usable area (NUF 1-7) is approx. 1,900 m². A gross floor area (GFA) of approx. 5,500 m² on 2 levels and a gross volume (BRI) approx. 71,000 m³ is to be expected.

Information on building statics

The new data center is located in the northeastern part of the campus site on the site of a former greenhouse facility. The construction site is located on an old refilled gravel pit. (Thickness replenishment up to approx. 15 m; loads according to LAGA up > Z2). The former greenhouse plant was built on bored piles.

A subsoil survey is available and will be made available as part of the invitation to tender.

Information on the planning work for the construction pit enclosure

The local conditions (former greenhouse system, refilled gravel pit, former bored pile foundation) must be taken into account. In these areas, the excavation pit will probably have to be installed. The type of installation and a possible re-anchoring including the statics of the installation must be planned. By submitting a request to participate, the applicants declare that they are in a position to provide the services within the period (see II.2.7) and, in particular, that they have the necessary professional, personnel, material and temporal resources at their disposal.

The special requirements for the provision of services may make it necessary to be available frequently/at short notice at the request of the client for coordination talks in Martinsried or in Munich.
