WSW Energie & Wasser AG owns or commissions three waterworks in Wuppertal, Wermelskirchen and Düsseldorf.

Both agglomerated hard coals and hard coal-coconut shell coal mixtures are used. In 2024, a total of approx. 350 tonnes of activated carbon are to be reactivated from all three plants, screened and replenished to the delivered quantity with loss supplementation by coconut shell charcoal. The reactivation can take place in batches of several filters as well as a single call-off of a filter.
In detail:
Collection of hard coal-based activated carbon and mixtures of stone and coconut shell activated carbons from originally 8 x 30 mesh. in the waterworks of the AG, reactivation of the coal including compensation of the screening and burning loss with coconut shell charcoal released by the AG according to DIN EN 12915 Part 1 and redelivery. The reactivated activated carbons must meet the criteria of DIN EN 12915-2.
As a loss supplement, coconut shell coals are 8x30 mesh. with a minimum iodine value of > 1100 mg/g.
