Renovation and reorientation of the core area of the Carthusian monastery in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, object planning

Renovation and reorientation of the core area of the Carthusian monastery in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

The object of the award is the services for object planning according to Part 3, Section 1, work phases 1 to 8 according to HOAI 2021.

Renovation and reorientation of the core area of the Carthusian monastery in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

The Germanic National Museum, founded in 1852 by Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufseß and housed at its current location since 1857, consists of a series of buildings and components from four eras:

- the medieval Carthusian monastery with church, refectory, small and large cloister and the monks' houses

- the historicist museum buildings until 1920, of which only the gallery building with lapidary and hall of honour as well as the south-west building are preserved after war destruction

- the buildings of the reconstruction of the 1950s to 1970s by Sep Ruf

- the extension completed in 1993 by the Hamburg architectural group Me di um

With the exception of the underground depot in the Großer Klosterhof, which is currently under construction, the construction measures in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum have since been limited to the renovation of the existing buildings. The renovation of the gallery building by German Bestelmeyer has been completed, the renovation and new furnishing of the medieval hall is in progress and should be completed in 2024. After completion of the underground depot, the next major renovation phase is the south and southwest building for the refurnishing of the cross-genre and cross-collection permanent exhibition area on the 19th century and individual specialist collections (musical instruments, textiles and clothing, weapons) as well as the renovation of the core area of the Carthusian monastery described here.

The buildings to be renovated are the monastery church from 1380 with the atriums to the north, the former glass painting hall, the small cloister, which was covered by Sep Ruf in the course of the reconstruction around 1967, the refectory and the so-called bell hall. In terms of content, the buildings serve to present the late Middle Ages and are thematically closely related to the Medieval Hall. The buildings, like the entire holdings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, are under monument protection and are registered as individual monuments in the list of monuments of the city of Nuremberg.

Some of the buildings have substantial deficiencies in the building envelope and the building technology. The energetic and building physics values correspond to the state of the time of origin. There is sufficient ventilation technology and air conditioning, the climatic conditions in the collection rooms are insufficient.

During the renovation, both the building envelopes - as far as technically possible and justifiable under monument law - and the technical equipment must be brought up to date. The exhibition contents will be revised in the course of the renovation.

The renovation measure must already be closely coordinated in the planning phase with the parallel renovation of the south and southwest buildings. Even during construction, there is an increased need for coordination with the interfaces of the two projects. It must be assumed that the measure must be implemented in two stages, the renovation of the monastery church with atriums as the first, the renovation of the small cloister with bell hall and refectory as the second section. The measure is subject to the budgetary provisions of state building construction, a project document (PU construction) in accordance with the RLBau must be drawn up, but also a building permit must be applied for from the city of Nuremberg.

The start of the measures can take place immediately, the execution should be completed by 2029.

The object of this award is the services for object planning according to Part 3, Section 1, work phases 1 to 8 according to HOAI 2021.
