Norsk Rikskringkasting AS, hereafter called NRK, plans to procure a system for contribution and transfer of media streams over the Internet for broadcasting purposes. The aim of the system is that is can be used as a compliment or replacement to traditional media transfer systems, based on 'carrier technology', with guaranteed capacity (such as satellite, fibre, or hired capacity). The new system is expected to give equally good quality, performance, and stability as with these.

NRK is assessing a hardware based system, physically located in NRK's premises, which will function as a 'gateway' between suitable transport protocols over the Internet to and from NRK's internal production infrastructure (called 'NRK page'). The idea for the configuration and dynamic establishment of connections is that they will be carried out by operative personnel in NRK's Master Control Room (MCR), through a user friendly interface and without a need for specialist help.
