The project area of the northern bypass Bad Zurzach is located on the ground of the municipality of Bad Zurzach. The northern bypass with the 1290m long tunnel was built in 1989. The electro-mechanical equipment has reached the end of its service life at the age of 25 and will be renewed in the course of the project. Individual sub-systems were replaced in the years 2006 – 2009 as part of small-scale measures. As the largest element, the control center was equipped with a new node computer and thus the northern bypass was connected to the higher-level control system ÜLS. In the driving compartment itself, only minimal adjustments were made. Among other things, the SOS niches and the emergency exits were painted according to today's guidelines and equipped with new signals.
The project of the northern bypass Bad Zurzach includes the complete renovation of the tunnel, as well as its development with two new escape routes that lead from the roadway via a staircase to the open air
