STFC have procured the manufacture of the Quantum Electron Microscopy (QEM) 2 sensor for supply to a consortium of international academic and commercial organisations. This sensor was designed at STFC, and will be manufactured at an Integrated Circuit fabrication plant (“fab”).
Having investigated the sourcing options, there was no competition available to meet the requirement, this was due to the fact that using a different “fab” would result in a sensor with different technical characteristics which would result in incompatibility and disproportionate difficulties in operation and maintenance technical difficulties.
It was therefore approved that a single sourcing action was appropriate.
