The German Climate Center GmbH (hereinafter referred to as the contracting authority) is the central IT facility for climate and earth system modeling in Germany and is one of the leading institutions in this field worldwide. The DKRZ operates in addition to supercomputers of the highest performance class and one of the largest data management systems worldwide.
The HSM system to be procured is to replace the hardware and software of the existing HSM system. Part of the procurement is also the maintenance and the support over a term of 5 years, with optional extension for further 2 years.
The HSM system to be procured is to replace the hardware and software of the existing IBM HPSS HSM system in version 7.5. The stock data of currently approx. 150 PB (1 PB = 10 high 15 bytes), spread over approx. 30 million files, are currently stored at the client in 2 hierarchical levels: in the first stage in a hard disk cache with a storage capacity of 5 PB and in the second stage around 45 000 magnetic tape cassettes, which are distributed over several tape libraries in two locations. The existing tape library system will continue to be used in the future.
The client is planning to procure a Hierarchical Storage Management System (HSM system) with a storage capacity of at least 1 EB (1000 PB) and a throughput of at least 15 GB / s (currently 150 PB add about 120 PB per year, so that a total storage capacity of at least 1000 PB (1 EB) must be managed). The operational readiness of the HSM system, including the migrated inventory data, should be established no later than 6 months after conclusion of the contract. The contractor should in particular provide the following services:
- Supply and installation of a hierarchical storage management system (HSM system) including the hardware for the first memory hierarchy level (cache for tap archive), also optional storage capacity expansions and an increase in the transfer rate of the system without long interruption of the operation may be possible) and the hardware for connection the magnetic tape drives in the provided tape library system,
- Migration of inventory data from the existing High Performance Storage System (HPSS). It must be ensured that the process of data transfer takes place without significantly limiting the availability of the data. In any case, it can be ruled out that this restriction lasts more than 7 days,
- Integration of the HSM system into the provided tape library system,
- Support, operational support and maintenance services over a 5-year period with an option to renew for another 2 years, for a maximum of 7 years.
