The basic principle of proof of visibility according to the RAA and RAL is the requirement that the existing visibility across the network must be greater than the required. The calculation of the existing visibility is required three-dimensionally. The RAA and RAL also stipulate that in the field of vision to be kept clear, in addition to the road, all obstacles that impair visibility (e.g. embankments with grass or shrub growth, noise barriers, protective devices, etc.) are avoided up to the height of the line of sight have to. However, there are no more concrete definitions of the obstacles to view, since selective obstacles are accepted.

Signposts, masts of gantries and bridge piers can often be found in the fields of vision on motorways and country roads. The RAA and RAL do not stipulate how far and to what dimensions they actually represent obstructions.
