In the first half of 2024, Belgium and its federated entities will hold the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the thirteenth time since the creation of the European Union. This intense diplomatic exercise involves the Federal Government and the Governments of the federated entities.
The Cooperation Agreement of 8 March 1994 defining the method of representation of Belgium within the Council of Ministers of the European Union specifies that:
"The federated entity that will occupy the seat of the Presidency in a matter will be required to organize and chair in addition and a fortiori, any meeting – ministerial or not – and ensure the management of intra-Belgian and European files and coordination relating to this matter".
Belgium and its entities have not exercised this responsibility for 13 years. It is therefore a unique opportunity to take an active part in the European project.
The Wallonia-Brussels Federation will chair the work of the Education and Sport Council and the Belgian Culture and Audiovisual Headquarters. In concrete terms, this means that during this period, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation will be at the centre of the debates by steering numerous official meetings within the Council of the EU and by organising several major events (conferences, informal meetings, DG meetings, symposia, etc.) where priority topics relating to these two competences will be discussed.
