Description:

The University of Warwick, Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) has a requirement for gas Analysis equipment as part of the expansion of their Battery Research facility for Li-ion and other battery chemistries.

This tender is split into 3 lots, suppliers are invited to submit a tender for the complete scope of supply within each lot or for 1 or more lots in which they are interested. Subcontracting will be considered and any subcontractors used should be highlighted within your bid.

The 3 lots are as follows:

Lot 1: In 1 experiment, small coin cells (< 30 mm diameter) will be made from electrode materials recovered from commercial lithium-ion cells. The equipment must polarise the cells over the whole voltage range and the gases evolved must be analysed. It is estimated that such cells will vent approximately 300 ml of gas. The gas analysis apparatus must be able to house the electrode materials in an enclosed coin cell (e.g. Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry cell) and channel vent gas to the gas analyser, without being corroded by these gases.

Lot 2: We wish to analyse the composition of gases being evolved from individual and combined battery components (Separator, binders, electrolyte) and active materials (Cathode and Anode powders) as they thermally degrade. Typical sample sizes are 32mm diameter disks between 10 and 300 microns thick. Temperatures of interest are between room temperature and approximately 800 degrees Celsius.

Lot 3: Full commercial Li-ion cells of up to 50 Ah capacity will undergo abuse conditions in a room that is dedicated for abuse testing. Such cells could vent up to 200 litres of gas in a violent thermal runaway. The gas analyser must be able to extract some, if not all, of this gas and quantify its constituent components.
