In 2009, the city of Wesseling acquired the station building and associated parts of it from Häfen- und Güterverkehr AG (HGK). On the one hand, the historic station building is to be renovated and valued in accordance with the preservation order, and on the other hand, the building is to be sustainably revitalized as a neighborhood-related community facility with a multifunctional usage concept and opened up to the citizens of Wesselingen. An attractive, high-profile use in the listed station building is a unique selling point and an important contribution to the sustainable upgrading and revitalization of the station environment.In the end, the Bürgerbahnhof is to serve as a neighborhood center in the city center and a new meeting place for all age and population groups; it is intended to provide and bundle a wide range of services for advice and information, for education and training, for support and care.

The subject of the planning services to be provided are service phases 5 to 7 of the building project planning service profile.

The basic architectural concept from the design and approval planning (LPH 3 and 4) for the renovation and conversion of the historic station building into a civic station has been retained and has been completed. In addition to the renovation of the historic station building in accordance with the requirements of the historic station building, the execution (object planning LPH 5 - 9) also included the demolition of the single-storey outbuildings on the east and west sides and the new two-storey building on the east side of the main building. This work has already been carried out, as well as the erection of the new building and the completion of the building envelope of the old building. This includes the roof of the old building, the plaster and painting of the outer façade, as well as the wooden windows on all floors. Although the metal construction trade has been awarded, the approval and execution is still pending, so that the door and window elements on the ground floor of the old building, as well as in the new building, are not yet available. For the newly constructed part of the building, the façade service area has also yet been awarded. For the entire construction, the focus is on the execution of the interior fittings, for which the largest proportion of trades has already been assigned.
