In 2003 the Norwegian parliament decided to regulate the requirement for gender balance on the boards of several types of companies. This was due to the very low percentage of women on company boards, both in public and private companies. In 2008 and 2009 cooperative companies and municipal limited companies were also covered by the Act.

The aim of the project is to get more knowledge on what effects the quota reform and even gender balance on boards has had in society, business, the companies and for women's participation in financial decision processes. This also includes a lack of effects. The conditions that are to be highlighted shall be assessed from the part of business life that is covered by the law compared with the part of business life where there are no legal requirements for gender balance on the boards.

Secondly the awarding authority would like a knowledge status that gives an overview of relevant national and international research on the effects of gender balance on boards and gender balance in (top) management.
