The preparation of a development vision (fixed part), the complete study and design assignment for the construction of a new S.M.A.K., Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (conditional part A) and the complete study and design assignment for the hull design of the underground parts for a new S.M.A.K. (conditional part B), within the building cluster in the Citadel Park in Ghent

S.M.A.K., Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, is a nationally and internationally leading museum with an exceptionally versatile collection from the post-war period to the present day. The museum focuses on the artist in its activities and is aimed at a wide and diverse audience.

S.M.A.K. was created in the context of a citizens' initiative. Bearing this history in mind, S.M.A.K. wishes to remain an open house focused on the city and the world in the future. With the new museum, a landmark is realized that anchors contemporary art in an urban, Flemish and international fabric. Education and accessible public activities are levers to strengthen the new museum as a reference place for the city, the region and Europe.

The current museum building offers just enough space for temporary exhibitions. In a new museum building, in addition to the temporary exhibitions, S.M.A.K. also wants to permanently present 500 works from its own collection (which totals 3500 works) to the public. Moreover, the existing building does not meet the international museum standards for air conditioning.

The ambition for a new S.M.A.K. is a well-equipped and sustainable building that meets international standards for museums, where its own collection can come into its own and where temporary exhibitions can be organized and welcomed. In addition, S.M.A.K. strives for a stronger connection with the public space of the park and its ecosystem, as well as a shared use with the neighbouring Museum of Fine Arts and the Ghent University Museum.

S.M.A.K. is located in the Citadelpark, the largest city park in Ghent. This park is recognized as a protected cultural-historical landscape. Since 1999, S.M.A.K. has been housed in the former casino building, which is part of a large and centrally located cluster of buildings in the park. All these buildings are adjacent to the impressive Floraliënhal, which was built on the occasion of the World Exhibition of 1913.
