Description:
New Forensic Science Weissenau building

task

The ZfP Südwürttemberg with a focus on psychiatric and psychosomatic treatment, based in Bad Schussenried, intends to build a new building for forensics at the Ravensburg-Weißenau site, each with 24 secure places on 2 separate admission and crisis intervention wards as well as a multi-purpose hall.

General Usage Requirements

As a branch of psychiatry, the prison performs sovereign tasks for the state of Baden-Württemberg. Specifically, the mandate is the "improvement and safeguarding" of people who have committed a crime due to a mental illness or disorders in a state of incapacity or diminished culpability (according to § 63 StGB). Forensic clinic buildings differ from other psychiatric hospital buildings in particular in their security and security requirements.

For architecture, this results in the special task of meeting this issue with an appropriate building design. This applies in particular to the enforcement of measures, the buildings of which must also meet special security requirements.

It can be assumed that the external and internal appearance of a psychiatric hospital / forensic clinic building has a strong influence on those people (patients, staff, relatives, other visitors) who enter and stay in the building.

Architecture can and should influence the emotional state of mind and thus the potential for aggression of the patients.

A friendly and well-groomed environment, sufficient room sizes, disentanglement of inpatient activities on the ward by providing spacious, diverse lounge and therapy areas can avoid cramped stress and the resulting potential for aggression. In summary, a forensic hospital building should appear bright and appealing both outdoors and indoors due to its architectural design, be clear, counteract (associations of) coercion and violence and overall convey an image of as much normality as possible, but at the same time discreetly provide all necessary structural-technical security measures without arousing any association with prison buildings. Attractive, but at the same time safe and robust equipment, materials and design elements support this objective.

The new construction project includes 2 separate admission and crisis intervention stations, each with 24 places in double and single rooms plus the necessary work, therapy and lounge areas. One part of the building is freely accessible from the outside, the other part protrudes into the enclosed forensic garden area, which also connects the other closed forensic buildings 33, 34 and 25 (Forensic Occupational Therapy). In the enclosed garden area there is a sports field, barbecue areas, etc. and the multi-purpose hall.

The design of the open spaces with integration into the overall concept of the Weissenau is an essential part of the overall measure. The awarding of the planning services for this purpose is carried out in a separate procedure.

Object planning of buildings and interiors (§ 34 HOAI) Basic services according to Annex 10, work phases 1-9, gradual, initially LP 1-3
