After the completion and commissioning of the new, approx. 600 m long culvert connection to the crossing of the Ruhr in the area of the Heisinger Ruhraue between the Gymnasium Überruhr and Wuppertaler Straße, a total of three different measures (Parts A, B and C) are to be implemented for three clients (Entwässerung Essen GmbH, Stadt Essen Grün and Gruga, Ruhrverband Essen). All measures (parts A-C) are to be carried out in the area of the old culvert route and are located within the nature conservation / fauna-flora-habitat area "Heisinger Ruhraue" in the district of Essen-Heisingen and Essen Überruhr-Hinsel. For construction logistical reasons and the aim of reducing interventions in the NSG and FFH area Heisinger Ruhraue, all three measures and their implementation are to be carried out in a joint tender.

On the basis of the existing water permits, the following measures are to be carried out:

Part A - Compensatory measure "Bauherr Entwässerung Essen GmbH (EEG)"

• Partial dismantling of the old culvert pipes (DN 300 and DN 400) in the course of floodplain renaturation on the south side of the Ruhr (in the direction of flow on the right side of the Ruhr) over a total length of 165 m

• Insulation of the two old culvert pipes (DN 300 and DN 400) in sections within the Ruhr floodplain (in the direction of flow on the right side of the Ruhr) over a total length of 167 m

• Excavations of the fillings for the restoration of the oxbow to the Ruhr over a width of approx. 25 m, including a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge in the area of the Ruhruferweg.

• Excavation in the heavily silted up "Altarmknick" to improve the flow through the oxbow lake

• Excavation of the areas between two floodplains (water bodies No. 2 and water bodies No. 3) at floodplain level

• Partial dismantling of the old culvert pipelines on the north side of the Ruhr (in the direction of flow on the left side of the Ruhr) on the site of the Essen-Überruhr drinking water production over a total length of 28 m

• Insulation of the two old culvert pipes and a casing pipe (DN 300 / DN 400 and NW 1100) in sections within the Ruhraue (in the direction of flow on the left side of the Ruhr), under the embankment / bridge of Marie-Juchacz-Straße and under the railway line over a total length of 182 m

On the basis of the digital terrain model, a total volume of approx. 8,460 m3 of soil material was determined for the excavations. This includes 1,300 m3 of wet sediment/mud soils, which must be extracted and disposed of.

Part B - Measure of the City of Essen "Bauherr Grün und Gruga Essen"

• Desilting and an extension of the water area of the northern floodplain water no. 2 (Wuppertaler Straße area) to maintain and develop a good conservation status as an FFH conservation objective

A total of 1,540 m3 of soil is to be removed for the desilting and expansion of the water surfaces (Part B). This includes 500 m3 of wet sediment/sludge soils (insitu), which must be extracted and disposed of.

Part C - Compensatory measure of the Ruhrverband "Bauherr Ruhrverband Essen"

• Near-natural expansion of a relief ditch at the mouth of the Ruhr on the site of the Essen-Überruhr drinking water production on Marie-Juchacz-Straße.

• The near-natural redesign of the relief ditch running parallel to the culvert (measures of the Ruhrverband) is to be carried out in the same period with the dismantling and insulation of the old culvert (measures of the EEG).

For the near-natural expansion of the relief ditch (Part C), a total of 60 m3 of reinforced concrete shells / slabs are to be dismantled and approx. 850 m3 of soil removed.

After completion of all the above-mentioned tasks. Measures are to be carried out, the dismantling of the construction equipment areas and the construction roads. According to this, the surface expansion of the new operating areas for the delivery of the culvert Unterhaupt on Wuppertalerstraße as well as the restoration of the claimed vegetation areas are planned. For this purpose, reforestation with a total size of 8,430 m2 is to be carried out and a total area of 7,450 m2 is to be sown with regional seeds.
