Alvøen school was built in several stages, with the main building built in 1952–1955, the classroom building from 1992, the primary school and before-and-after school care building in 1997, the gym building and volleyball hall in 2005, and the pavilion in 2007.
Based on an overall assessment of the condition and functionality, the decision was made to demolish the east wing of Alvøen school and replace it with a new building. It was decided to simultaneously build new permanent classrooms to replace the pavilions, which can then be removed.
The school will be designed for a normal capacity of 500 students. The learning areas must be flexible and must be adaptable to changes in the number of students, diverse ways of working, new organisation and varying group sizes. Solutions in line with school usage plan within the approved financial framework shall be sought. In addition to meeting business objectives, the construction should be controlled by the terms provided in the city council's decision as regards passive/low energy design and statutory requirements of universal design. Lifetime Cost estimates (LCC) shall be applied when choosing between alternative solutions.
Other issues to be rectified by school facility:
Adaptation of the new addition to the middle wing of the administration building, and a possible renovation of the center-wing's roof, improved student WCs, replacement of the ventilation system, various electric installations.
The entrance to the school will be upgraded.
Deviations related to staff workplaces and WCs.
