Supply and installation of a press for solvent-free fractionation of biomaterials for research group Radius.
Radius is a unique research group that was created through the collaboration between the Agro-Bio Technology, Chemistry and Biomedical Laboratory Techniques programmes at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences.
Radius combines these diverse areas of expertise with sustainable development.
This makes it the only research group in Flanders that focuses on both growing biomass and extracting and modifying it into bio-based chemicals.
This is done on both a lab and pilot scale.
Radius has expertise in:
- Cultivation of insects and microalgae
- Extraction of bio-based chemicals
- Pilot-scale separation techniques
- Characterization of biomass, nutrient media and residual flows for insects and algae cultivation
- Modeling (in silico models) in predicting physicochemical and (eco)toxic properties
Components are extracted from the insects and microalgae, and then used in (livestock) food and applied products.
As part of these necessary analyses, investments are being made in a press
with the aim of:
- Solvent-free fractionation of biomass to isolate oil:
o The biomass consists of (partly) dried insects
o If possible, the biomass consists of (partly) dried microalgae
