The Köhlbrand Bridge has been one of the most famous bridges in Germany since its opening in 1974 and is a landmark of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. By crossing the Köhlbrands as a tributary of the Elbe, it acts as an important part of the main port route between the junction Waltershof ("West connection area, Finkenwerder road / BAB A7) and Neuhof (" East connection area ", connection Neuhöfer dam / Ross dam). It spans the Köhlbrand with a clear height of NHN +53.0 m and a max. Span of 325 m.
The economic and technical life of the Köhlbrand Bridge is forecasted to be 2030. In the summer of 2018, a feasibility study for the technical investigation of a replacement structure over the Köhlbrand with the variants bridge, bored tunnel and immersion tunnel was completed.
As a result, the variants bridge and bored tunnel have emerged as technically equivalent. The Senate decision for a variant has not yet been made, so that for both variants a participation contest is carried out. After determining the preferential variant at the beginning of 2019, the negotiated procedure is to be carried out for them and the preliminary planning commissioned.
Note: The application for this competition does not lead to the candidate being excluded from the parallel competition for the project "New Köhlbrand Crossing (NKBQ) - Drilling Tunnel".
