To support this, there is an integration obligation in the Netherlands that follows from the Civic Integration Act. Learning the language and stimulating participation are central to this. In the new integration system (the aim is to come into effect on 1.1.2022), three learning routes have been included that, compared to the old system, should enable more customization, place more focus on participation and offer programs aimed at achieving a higher language level. than in the past. Participants take the integration exam in two of the three learning routes. This is possible for the language components at three language levels (B1, B2 or A2 level). The Civic Integration Exam consists of five exams that can be taken separately, in any order and at different times.
