The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has responsibility for providing social work services for British military personnel, entitled UK civil servants and their dependants based in overseas locations. This requirement is currently met in Germany, Belgium and Cyprus through a contracted-out service. The current contract ends on 31.3.2013. After this time it is intended to bring together the social work services for all overseas bases within one contract. This will cater for the service communities in: Germany [Pop 38,333], other European countries less Germany [Pop3000], Cyprus [Pop 7,343], Falkland Islands [Pop 1,150], Gibraltar [Pop 1,013], Canada (BATUS) [Pop 610],Kenya (BATUK) [Pop 232], Nepal [Pop 159] and Brunei [Pop 2,230].

The headline areas of social work are:

— Children, young people and families. this includes: children in need, safeguarding children and young people, family law proceedings (Cafcass), witness support, victim support, blue badge vetting scheme,

— Vulnerable adults,

— Adoption and fostering services.
