In order to go beyond the frontier of current knowledge in fundamental physics (Standard Model, super-symmetry, neutrino oscillations, origin and nature of matter and dark energy, nuclear and hadronic physics) and to develop new scientific instruments for many applications (energy, nuclear waste management, medicine), high-performance particle accelerators are needed. These accelerators are very demanding in terms of performance, reliability, construction and operation processes.
