GRID-Arendal’s Waste and Marine Litter Program aims to produce a short film (10 minutes) that lays out the possible paths forward for informal waste workers. It’s a film about recognition. Can UN recognition create momentum towards recognition in domestic legislation?
During the United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2022, a legally binding resolution was agreed to by 175 countries with the goal of ending plastic pollution. The resolution recognizes the “significant contribution made by workers in informal and cooperative settings to the collecting, sorting and recycling of plastics in many countries,” but what does this recognition mean practically?
Some countries like Brazil have legally recognized the role of informal sector waste workers, but others are taking different approaches. While there may be no one size fits all solution, there are many different solutions. Some working towards formalization, others preferring to support waste workers as informal workers, and others focusing on a combination of both.
GRID-Arendal’s Waste and Marine Litter Program aims to produce a short film (10 minutes) that lays out the possible paths forward for informal waste workers. It’s a film about recognition. Can UN recognition create momentum towards recognition in domestic legislation?
Hearing from the policymakers exploring different paths forward, the people on the ground working with informal waste workers every day and the waste workers themselves, viewers will get a glimpse of what happens after plastic is discarded, whose hands it passes through, and how we might want to improve the conditions and circumstances surrounding this key step.
This film will also serve as a call to action, encouraging viewers to act to legally protect informal waste workers. This will ensure these essential workers are treated with respect and that we will move forward as partners in a global circular economy.
