At the Institute for Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, compressible flows are investigated in transsonic and supersonic. To carry out experiments in the context of research and teaching, the institute has the “Trisonic Wind Tunnel Munich” test facility, hereinafter referred to as TWM.
The TWM is an intermittent test plant in which compressed air is initially stored in a boiler system at an overpressure of 20 bar for each wind tunnel test by means of compressors. The size of the boiler volume determines the duration of the test. The boiler plant, which was built around 1980 and has a volume of around 350 m3, has reached its load limit and needs to be renewed to ensure the safe operation of the TWM in the future.
