Description:
Species monitoring according to Articles 11 and 17 of the Habitats Directive in Saxony-Anhalt: Investigation of the Bechstein bat (Myotis bechsteinii) as part of the federal monitoring in 2023

The aim of the service is to carry out a round of investigations at nurseries and their surroundings within the framework of the federal monitoring of the Bechstein bat (Myotis bechsteinii) in Saxony-Anhalt as a basis for the assessment of its conservation status in accordance with the FFH Directive. For this purpose, the corresponding data must be collected in the field and evaluated according to uniform criteria.

Klüdener Pax-Wanneweh east of Calvörde (FFH0025LSA) - Monitoring of nurseries and their surroundings

1 Scope of services

1.1 General

The methodological requirements for data collection and evaluation are based on the requirements for nationwide monitoring (BfN & BLAK 2017). The requirements set there must be complied with. Deviations are only possible for compelling professional reasons and only in agreement with the client (AG).

The selection of monitoring areas is based on the results of the recordings of the first round of the federal monitoring of the Bechstein bat in the current reporting period (MYOTIS 2019).

The service to be provided includes the monitoring of the weekly rooms and the hunting area in their environment in 2023.

1.2 Selection of specific study areas

Habitats protection areas in the Atlantic region are designated as monitoring areas.

From this territorial background, the following area is to be worked on in this LOT 1:

FFH0025LSA "Klüdener Pax-Wanneweh east of Calvörde"

Any necessary coordination shall be carried out with the land owners/users concerned and, if necessary, agreement shall be reached.

1.3 Nets and telemetry for the identification of nurseries

Within the above-mentioned monitoring area, the contractor shall select specific suitable net catching sites in the field. In the monitoring area, at least 4 net trapping sites must be processed, which are suitable fishing sites for the Bechstein bat. The previous site selection of other investigations commissioned by the AG in the FFH areas can also be taken into account (MYOTIS 2010 & 2019). The corresponding expert opinions and coordinates shall be made available to the Contractor.

The net catches must be carried out with suitable nets ("nylon doll hair nets") adapted to the location at different lengths and heights (use of terrestrial nets and high nets at catch heights between 5 - 12 m). Decisive is the capture success for the Bechstein bat. The captured bats must be released promptly, as well as the rapid tagging of a suitable female and the subsequent release must be ensured. For the documentation of the species repertoire at the fishing site, the net catch is not to be interrupted even after a rapid catch success of a suitable female with the transmitter. The fishing period is the weekly period (if possible before the "flight" of the young animals), which is seasonally between mid-June and mid-July, depending on the weather and species. The specific fishing period must be agreed in advance with the AG.

Captive females of the Bechstein bat with reproduction characteristics should be marked with suitable telemetry transmitters (calculation basis: 3 transmitters/telemetrized animals). Telemetry is carried out with the aim of finding nursery quarters where it is possible to determine the number of individuals. At the determined nursery quarters, an evening excursion count to record the departing females or a possible count in the quarters is to be carried out using suitable methods. Further telemetry of the animals must take place over the lifetime of the transmitters of at least 10 days, so that any changes of roost can be logged. In addition, further excursion counts / neighborhood counts should be carried out, for new quarters this is mandatory.

There should be a short-term coordination with the AG if no suitable females of the Bechstein bat were caught after the first 3 net catches. So that for the 4th catch a relocation of calculated activities can then be considered in coordination with the AG - only work actually performed can be billed.

Net catch locations as well as identified weekly rooms must be documented spatially exactly.

All further catches of bats shall be determined, recorded and entered into the database of bat records.

1.4 Recording of population-related parameters in nurseries

The contractor carries out the survey of the population-related parameters in the nurseries in accordance with the specifications of the current assessment schemes for the species according to BfN & BLAK (2017). For this purpose, the excursion counts must be carried out at the determined nursery quarters. For this purpose, the tree species, the quarter type and other parameters such as tree height, BHD and vitality must be documented. If nursery quarters are located in bat boxes, the neighborhood characteristics must also be documented and, in coordination with the working group, the possible caretakers of the boxes must be informed. Furthermore, the surroundings of the nursery quarters must also be documented. As far as possible and reasonable, all documentation must also be carried out photographically.

1.5 Recording of habitat and impairment parameters

The contractor carries out the collection and documentation of the population-related parameters in the nurseries in accordance with the specifications of the current assessment schemes for the species according to BfN & BLAK (2017). In order to determine the habitat status of the hunting areas in the monitoring areas, the relevant habitat characteristics shall be included. For this purpose, the characteristic "tree cavity density" for the Bechstein bat in the monitoring area shall be recorded and extrapolated to at least 10 sample plots of 1 ha each or 20 sample plots of 0.5 ha each.

For the assessment of the impairments, current influencing factors (e.g. forestry measures, construction and renovation measures at the summer quarters) must be documented on site.

1.6 Assessment of conservation status

The Contractor carries out an evaluation of the nurseries on the basis of the applicable parameters of the current assessment schemes for both species (BfN & BLAK 2017) (excerpt for the evaluation of the nurseries and hunting areas, see Appendix 1b). The content of the evaluation must be agreed with the Client.

1.7 Requirements for data storage

Topographic digital data shall be supplied as an ESRI shapefile.

All catch results and location data shall be recorded in tabular form.

All collected data on habitat parameters and impairments must be recorded in tabular form (MS Excel format). Table formats must be agreed with the Client.

The original data of all detections of all bat species must also be entered into a database in the MultibaseCS.

2. Partial services and reporting

2.1 Interim report (partial performance 1)

The Contractor shall draw up a written interim report in which the following contents are presented:

-The interim report must be accompanied by all initial data of net catches, telemetry, nursery surveys and habitat surveys in tabular form, digitised topographical data determined as ESRI shapefiles

- Art database as MultibaseCS file

The written interim report shall be delivered in a single copy.

2.2 Final report (partial service 2)

The Contractor shall draw up a final written report in which the information required in accordance with Clauses 1.2 to 1.7 is presented in full in context.

A maximum degree of comparability with the previous reports should be sought.

The final report shall be structured as follows:
