At the former impregnation plant in Södra Vi, Vimmerby, operations were conducted from the early 1900s until 2011. At the plant, impregnation of mainly wire poles and railway sleepers has been carried out with creosote oil and arsenic salt. The area is contaminated in soil, sediment and groundwater with arsenic, chromium, copper, zinc and PAHs.
According to the main study, about 42,000 tons of soil need to be remedied.
Since it has been shown over the past 10 years that conventional soil washing of arsenic-contaminated soil entails increased leaching of arsenic to groundwater from washed soil, SGU believes that extra measures are required to ensure that arsenic does not leach in unacceptable amounts.
The current assignment that the current framework agreement covers is to carry out action preparatory work and to assist in the preparation of tender documents for post-treatment measures within Stabsuecia's former impregnation plant on the properties affected in Södra Vi, Vimmerby.
