After the foundation of the monastery in 1015, the construction of the church began immediately, which was consecrated on 2 November 1021 in the presence of Emperor Henry II. The monastery church of St. Michael was closed in November 2012 due to an acute risk of collapse. Massive cracks in the ceiling sails of the church vault, severe loss of substance and constant emergency safety measures on facades and walls, leaking roof coverings and insufficient drainage made this imperative. In recent years, a variety of preliminary investigations have taken place on the room shell and equipment as well as the static repair of the church. In the years 2015-2019, the church was fundamentally statically secured. The roof structures were repaired, roofing and roof sheet metal were renewed, vaults were stabilized, masonry was statically revised and foundation improvements were carried out in some areas.

On the basis of a participation competition, the restoration of the set furnishings and the paintings in the annex buildings (Marienkapelle, Hl. Grab-Kapelle) as well as in the sacristy will be advertised.

All of the set items of equipment including the paintings in the components listed above are to be processed.

The focus of the works, as well as the weighting in the participation competition, is on the conservation and restoration of the high-quality set furnishings of the Holy Sepulchre Chapel with the associated sculptural equipment as well as the extensive collection of paintings.

In addition to the constructive repair of the objects, it is planned to maintain the traditional condition of the mostly late Baroque equipment.
