The aim of this research is to understand the scale of the cultural infrastructure maintenance backlog to assess the potential cost of government intervention, understand why this backlog exists and develop a methodology for assessing the impact of investment into improving cultural infrastructure to make a better and more-informed case for government intervention. The focus is on theatre venues and publicly accessible heritage-based attractions in England. The research is expected to include a combination of surveys based on a representative sample of organisations and in-depth case studies with specific organisations. We expect this project to produce a publishable report to summarise the results of the research alongside a dynamic spreadsheet to cost various potential government intervention scenarios. The evaluation is expected to be awarded and commence in November 2023 and expected to complete by March 2024.
